P90X The Journey Begins

Let me start by telling you where I was almost a year ago, I was 30 years old, 5ft 9inches tall and 195lbs. Now by no means was I extremely over weight, or obese, but I was sadly out of shape, and had found myself with the infamous pear shape. My problem was as I got older I continued to eat like was a teenager, drinking anywhere between 10-15 soft drinks per day, all kinds of junk food, and my only exercise was…well…there was none. I was a father of 3 beautiful girls, owned my own business and honestly just felt like I didn’t have the time to exercise, or the desire.

So one night I was sitting around watching TV, with what I’m sure was a big bowl of chips, and a 2 liter of Dr. Pepper close within reach, and probably some ice cream in the freezer when the P90X commercial came on. I remember watching this commercial laughing at these idiots on the TV, because in my infinite wisdom I was positive that there was no way it was possible to get those kinds of results in 90 days. Before long, for whatever reason, found myself asking if I believed what I just saw, and it was not long after that found myself wondering if this program could actually work? So I figured “What the heck, I’ll give it a try”, Surely I could devote an hour a day for 90 days, besides what have I got to lose other than a few extra pounds, and let’s be honest who does not want to be ripped. So I made the call and waited for my new exercise program to arrive in the mail, I was ready to start losing the flab, burning some fat and building lean muscle or at least I thought I was.

In the past I’ve done rather should I say attempted many exercise programs, and for some odd reason I always fell short of my goal. Who am I kidding I did not even make it anywhere near my goal, the video’s never even made it into the DVD player, mainly because I’m lazy, and un motivated. For whatever reason these were different, maybe it was because they were not super cheap, or maybe it’s because I was just tired of going downhill who knows why, but I was determined this go around. So I patiently waited for my video’s to arrive, all the while convincing myself that in just 90 short days I was going to be a lean mean fighting machine. Yes I know, I’m gullible and I believe in little fairies that fly around and grant people wishes.

In a short 7 days my wait was over and my video’s arrived, I tore open the package not quite sure what to expect, what I saw staring back at me was a bit un-nerving, between bands, DVD’s literature, and pull ups. I was starting to think that this could be a little more than what I bargained for (and it only took about 10 minutes of the first P90X video for me to KNOW this was more than I bargained for).That evening I decided to give the nutrition guide a read, mid way through I was getting really disappointed that I was going to have to give up my soft drinks, pizza’s and candy bars, to get the most out of the system. But hey, I spent money on this, so I at least need to be half way committed, so that’s exactly what I did, gave up all the junk, and followed the nutrition guide as closely as possible.

At the same time I started the P90X workouts, and gave everything I had to the program, the very first day I thought I was going to pass out, or throw up, I can never remember working so hard, even when I was in the military and doing push-ups and what not every day, I found myself more winded doing these workouts. It was truly grueling, but I got through it, and thought to myself how glad I was to have that over, only to wake up the next morning to find muscles I did not even know I had were sore. Do not get me wrong even though I was in pain, it felt good in a strange way, I knew I had accomplished something and was on my way to a better me.

Swish Swoosh Swash(that’s my sound of traveling through a time portal as we fast forward) 10 months later, I’m now in the best shape of my life, and I continue to do the P90X workouts 6 days a week, I feel better, have more energy, and am definitely in the best shape of my life from following through with this program.

The biggest problem with fast weight loss is that if you lose it fast, it will come back fast. Dieting slows metabolism, among other things. Therefore, to lose weight and keep it off forever, it is important that you keep some things in mind. First of all, realize that permanent weight loss requires a permanent shift in your attitudes, habits, and lifestyle. The best place to start with some small changes. The first change? Reduce your fat intake. If you just consume 500 fewer calories everyday you will reduce your body weight by 1 pounds in 1-week. One pound of fat is 3,500 calories (7 days X 500 calories per day = 3,500 calories = 1 pound of fat).

1. Consider the difference in fat intake if you made your omelet using whole eggs instead of egg substitute. Egg yolks are 75-95% pure fat while egg substitute is 0% fat. Making this one simple shift will reduce your total calorie intake dramatically.

2. Or look at the percentage of fat you get when you eat that snack cake or cookie. Why do you like the taste of butter or margarine on your foods, or do you have the idea that skim milk tastes like cloudy water? Well, that could be your biggest problem. If you’re over weight, you most likely got that way because of consistent, tiny daily actions. It was your life-style that did it to you. And part of your lifestyle is the foods you currently enjoy eating.

3. It is not that hard to learn to enjoy new types of food. Just work at making some simple shifts to weight loss friendly foods, foods that will be kinder to your body transformation objectives. For example, if you want to change the appearance and consistency of skim milk, you can use condensed skim milk to flavor it. This contributes tiny amount of calories plus protein and carbohydrate, but zero extra fat calories.

3. To lose body fat successfully, that is, to rid the body of fat and keep it off, you must change what you enjoy eating. This is an integral part of the commitment to changing your life-style. If you don’t do this, you will never rid the body of unwanted fat. Consider this, if you simply ate five hundred fewer fat calories per day (that’s five tablespoons of butter or margarine), you could probably lose one pound per week of fat (and probably more than one pound per week of total weight).

4. Now consider cheese and nuts. These foods, popular as snacks and condiments, provide huge fat-calorie load. Many health advocates recommend both nuts and cheese as “health” foods. Unfortunately, if fat loss is your goal, the high fat content of nearly all cheese, even those that advertise themselves as part-skim, makes cheese an unwise choice for most people who are interested in ridding their bodies of excess fat.

5. Most cheeses get more than 70% of their total calories from fat and they are far from “health” foods. They can be eaten in moderation as part of a healthy diet; but the very high saturated fat content makes cheese a poor choice for people concerned about their waistline.

6. You’ll need to take portions sizes into consideration too. Realize that the amount of fat you eat every day is cumulative. In other words, if you’re eating small portions of foods containing fat throughout the day, although the fat count could be low, your total fat consumed will be added to your daily total intake total. So a great way to lose body fat is to find the low or non-fat varieties of food to replaces the high fat food.

When Does Quitting Smoking Stop?

I quit smoking about a week ago. When does this get easier?!? I am so stressed and emotional ALL the time and the weird thing is, I don’t really want to smoke…I just want to STOP thinking about it! Everynight I have dreams that I smoke, my family all smokes so I can’t handle being around them. My fiance is the only one who makes me feel GREAT because he HATES smoking and is super supportive but he works all day of course.
