I quit cold turkey and it was successful.
If you allow yourself too much leeway in quitting gradually, you always find it possible to justify "just one more" cigarette

I quit cold turkey 25 years ago after smoking 3 packs a day, It was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life, but I am so glad that I did. You just have to have a LOT of will power.

Well if you had STRONG will power and quit suddenly you might make it, but it's hard just to quit cold turkey.. And gradually cutting back might work if you can actually do that. The best are the patches and now theres a pill that a dr. can prescribe to help you quit smoking.

i went on patches for four weeks then the chewing gum which i cut into three small bits as i found them to strong to take all at once i went to boots who were doing a scheme, that you go on for i think it was about ten weeks. you only paid for the first lot of patches and the rest of the course was free don,t know if they still do it.

Gradually quitting doesn't really work. I am quitting right now. I tried cold turkey, but it was very difficult. I called (866) NYQUITS and they sent me free Nicorette gum. If you are not from NY state, there might be something similar in your state. Gum works well. I have about five pieces a day and I am on day five of not smoking. The hotline also offers free patches or lozanges. Your best bet is just to quit. Good luck!

I sorry if my answer does not help OP but I just wanted to share that I have tried to cut smoking both gradually and just suddenly, with help of nicotine gums/patches or without them. unfortunately, all the time that I've tried, I failed and started to smoke again after some time (the longest was 15 days)
the problem is, sometimes when you get too emotional, sensitive to something or feel not so well (mentally), you seek something to do and the first thing you want is to smoke
my suggestion is, don't try to quit if your life is not going so well, when it does then it is the best time to try, however mind that you are getting this piece of advice from a smoker who hasn't been able to quit "yet".
good luck
